Note: This chapter does not cover interim assistance pending a fair hearing. For that information, see Supplemental Handbook Chapter 870.
Interim assistance is General Assistance (GA), or State Blind Pension (SBP) granted to individuals:
who have applied for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) until they receive their first SSI payment; or
whose SSI is suspended pending a renewal.
These individuals must:
meet all GA cash assistance or SBP eligibility requirements; and
agree to repay the GA assistance or SBP they receive while the SSI payment is pending.
A GA individual whose SSI has been suspended must cooperate with the Social Security Administration (SSA) in having his or her eligibility redetermined.
The CAO must authorize GA for those individuals who are eligible. The CAO must review the case to ensure that the SSA is reevaluating the individual's eligibility. If not, the CAO must advise the individual that he or she is required to cooperate with the SSA.
Certain SSI recipients may also qualify for interim assistance if their SSI or other income check is lost, stolen, or delayed, or if a change in circumstances would entitle them to a higher SSI payment.
