Repatriated Nationals Assistance is available for 90 days from the date the person arrives in the U.S. The repatriate may apply for and receive repatriation assistance any time in the 90 day period. Assistance for qualifying persons is available from the date he or she was found eligible, but no earlier than the date of application.
The CAO will not authorize a cash payment retroactive to arrival date.
The CAO reviews each recipient’s situation every 30 days to find if circumstances have changed and now require a different plan for the repatriate.
When the CAO finds that a temporary assistance recipient has enough resources available to meet his or her needs, the CAO will end temporary assistance.
Repatriation Assistance may be extended when:
The recipient asks for an extension before the 90 days ends.
The recipient does not qualify for assistance through any other program and is handicapped in becoming self-supporting for reasons such as age, disability, or lack of vocational training.
DHHS authorizes the extension.
The CAO will send the extension request with supporting information to the Headquarters Program Unit to be forwarded to:
International Social Services (ISS)
200 East Lexington Street, Suite 1700
Baltimore, Maryland 21202
(443) 451-1200
The request for extension should include:
Summary of the individual’s circumstances justifying the request.
Proof of efforts to secure other resources to meet the individual’s needs.
Length of time the individual will need assistance.
Reason the individual needs assistance.
At the end of the 90 day (or extended) period, the dependents of a repatriated U.S. citizen may qualify for other assistance under the Refugee Assistance Program. See Chapter 730, Refugee Assistance Program.
