316.9 MAWD Closure

MAWD eligibility ends on the last day of the calendar month that eligibility conditions are no longer met, and in which advance notice ends or when the individual requests that benefits be stopped. (See Chapter 377, Notices, for information about notification.)

Before closing the MAWD budget, the CAO will determine whether the individual is eligible for other MA groups, such as Healthy Horizons, MNO, or NMP spend-down.

If the individual is found eligible in another MA group, the CAO will authorize medical benefits in the new category without any break in coverage. A notice of a change in coverage must be sent.

NOTE:  To give enough notice for budget closings, the budget can stay in active MAWD status for extra calendar months. The CAO will enter good cause code 05 (administrative processing) to let the Central Office know that a premium is not needed for those additional months. The CAO will note in the case comments why good cause is given.
