To qualify for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)-related Medical Assistance (MA) (TC/TU) or the low-income Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI)-related group (MG27), a child must meet age requirements, live with a specified relative or other adult caretaker, and be deprived of the support, care, or guidance of one or both parents due to unemployment or underemployment.
A child is considered deprived if they meet both of the following:
Age 17 and under or age 18 and a full-time secondary or vocational student.
One or both parent(s) or specified relative have income at or below the applicable income standard for TANF-related Medically Needy Only (MNO) (TC/TU) or low-income MAGI-related MA (MG 27).
Deprivation is also a factor when deciding whether an adult qualifies as a specified relative (TC/TU or MG 27) or caretaker (MG 27 only).
A caretaker is any adult with whom the deprived child resides and has primary responsibility for the child’s care.
For more information about specified relatives, see Chapter 327, Specified Relatives
To be eligible for a TANF-related MNO category (TC/TU) or low-income MAGI-related (MG 27) MA, the adult must meet the following criteria:
Age 21 and over
Taking care of and being in charge of a deprived child.
Have income at or below the applicable income standard for TANF-related MNO (TC/TU) or low-income MAGI-related MA (MG 27).
See Chapter 369, Appendix A Medically Needy Only Income Limits.
