An ineligible student’s income is not counted when determining a household’s eligibility and benefit amount. Therefore, the CAO must not require a household to verify an ineligible student’s income.
An eligible student’s gross non-exempt income must be verified (see: Chapter 578.32).
Since educational assistance is exempt income, the CAO must not require verification of educational assistance, unless questionable. If a situation arises that requires further clarification, verification of educational assistance may include an award letter or statement from the school or from the grantor of the loan, grant, or scholarship.
Verification may be provided by the household, if the grantor or school refuses to provide the information.
