Summary
Before taking the quiz, read through this summary. It will help you review the major principles and strategies for teaching adult learners.
The content of this short training program was organized around 5 major principles called the “5 E’s”: Engage, Excite, Enhance, End, and Evaluate. Understanding how to use the 5 “E” principles is key to developing successful training sessions that engage trainees and facilitate learning. When thinking about the 5 E’s, remember the vignettes because they illustrated how to apply these principles in real teaching situations.
Here is a brief review of these principles.
Principle 1 – Engage – to support learners in feeling comfortable within the group and with the instructor while actively involving them in the topic.
- Create an inviting adult learner setting
- Establish rapport with group members
- Connect to the learners' interests
- Recognize learners' prior knowledge and experience
- Establish learning goals
Principle 2 – Excite – to stimulate interest in the topic and provide opportunities for active learning that encourage application and reinforcement of content.
- Spark motivation to learn about the topic
- Explain reasons for the importance of the learning at hand
- Relate topic to real-life experiences through stories or past personal experiences
- Provide positive reinforcement and encourage internal motivation
- Demonstrate respect for learners by valuing all ideas and divergent learning styles
Principle 3 – Enhance – to increase understanding of training content using experience-based methods of teaching that directly apply to the workplace.
- Widen the range of experiences through application learning activities
- Encourage generalization of topics to real-life experiences
- Vary activities to maintain interest and accommodate different learning styles.
- Identify appropriate instructional aides to support teaching concepts.
- Sequence learning from simple to complex and from group-supported to solo efforts
- Design short teaching segments no longer than 20 minutes followed by interactive activities
Principle 4 – End – to bring learning to closure through summarization that reinforces key concepts.
- Provide concise summary of key ideas
- Provide opportunities for reflection
- Encourage thinking about “how” the new learning can be used
Principle 5 – Evaluate – to determine the value or impact of learning that occurred.
- In an unobtrusive manner determine the learning that has occurred
- Determine additional information learners want to know
- Obtain feedback about the training methods
- Maintain a record keeping system to document outcomes and complete reporting
